It’s been in the back of my mind for a long time to use actual tunes from a medieval or Renaissance secular song as the basis for an original motet. This music, for Conn-O-Sax Quartet, seemed like the right vehicle to make that happen. After searching through my usual sources, I decided upon Guillaume Machaut’s “Le Lay de Plour.” I had set his 12 romance poems to original music several years ago, but this time, I went back to Machaut’s melodies to the same texts – which I took mostly verbatim and incorporated into this quartet.
