Program Notes

Originally composed for brass quintet, MOTET was intended to be reminiscent of the sounds of renaissance choir music. While writing the music, I kept (vaguely) in the back of my mind the sounds of music by Italian composers of the 1600s, with an image of sounds echoing in vast cathedral-like spaces. Like much early music, the work is structured in 2 parts – a slow, somewhat sombre introduction, followed by a fast, lively section filled with imitative melodies. I think of it as Italian in style in that I tried to capture the lightness, delicacy and liveliness that is typical of nearly everything that is Italian – whether it be music, literature or art.
