Program Notes

Earlier this week, I set a poem by Nazir Hikmet after a copy of his collected poems arrived at my doorstep. I dedicated the song to Beste Kalender, as it was she who, in a conversation a week before, had mentioned that Hikmet was her favorite poet.

Of course, as is my way, once started on something, I get obsessed and so, finishing one poem, I started on another, both poems from the same series, written by Hikmet from prison, a series of what might be characterized as love letters to his wife during their separation by walls only penetrable by love.
